But, the local author says there is an upside too: 'Apart from meeting the readers, fans, signing their books and chatting to them, which is always a joy, I actually hate being on tour because it's a bunch of airports, hotel rooms and long car rides and being away from home,' said Derek. But, because COVID is on everyone's mind, including his, he said he is hearing increasing reports of mass writer's block around the world.
And with the final two books in the series yet to be written, Derek said he is 'sad but delighted' the series is coming to an end. Derek, who started out as a scriptwriter before delving into writing children's books - having written two screenplays that were made into films - the IFTA award-winning Dead Bodies in and the IFTA-nominated Boy East Girl starring Samantha Mumba in , said Skulduggery 'cried out to be a book'.
He explained: 'I firmly saw myself as a screenwriter but every so often you get something that cries out to be something that needs to be. He said Skulduggery was the 'best character I would ever create', adding: 'I know there is something special about him so I owed it to him and myself to give this my absolute best shot. However, it has since emerged that it may have been an algorithm issue at a publishing sub-contractors.
They made a mistake. Fair enough. This 'look on the bright side' attitude has also helped Landy with his take on the lockdowns we've all endured over the past year. The only big impact is that when it all started I assumed I would keep on writing and get through loads of work. But to write I need to daydream and that wasn't possible with all that was going on — so that stopped me from writing until about August.
