The underdog triumphs After the tornado of violence that opens Harry Brown , we meet the title character and are lead to believe that he is an old man with not much fight left in him. Superior filmmaking Putting aside Caine and his character, the film as a whole is a great example of the hard-bitten, gritty English council estate crime genre. Ben Drew It would be wrong to talk about Harry Brown without mentioning the power and menace that Ben Drew draws on to portray the young punk Noel Winters.
Be grateful Harry Brown makes you glad you can walk out your front door and generally not feel in danger. Daniel Hubbard Casting. Kave Quinn Production Design. Christopher Lowe Art Director. View All Critic Reviews Feb 28, There's been a few films like this before, Usually set in America and always ends up being just another action movie, This is set in London and is very believable, Michael Cane was brilliant and carries the film, It has some quite gruesome scenes and the film fires on all cylinders from the acting, The whole tone of the movie is done well, It's even emotional at times, It can be hard to imagine anyone Michael Canes age doing something like this but it works well and is different to other films like it, A very unappreciated film that maybe not for everyone but is very gripping from start to finish.
Jamie C Super Reviewer. Apr 09, Directors C Super Reviewer. Nov 26, An ex-Marine becomes a vigilante in a crime-ridden estate. Michael Caine is a vulnerable badass and gives a strong performance in the lead role of this morose action film. But it is unfortunate that he is the sole highlight of this film. Emily Mortimer is about as believable as a cop as Charlton Heston was believable as a Mexican.
There is not an ounce of toughness to her character, and her attempts at the "wise detective" trope fall flat. What is more, the story packs no surprises except for the improbable ones, and even these feel like a writer over-manipulating his plot. Overall, I like Michael Caine, but I can't like this film. Jim H Super Reviewer. Feb 06, Caine's Harry Brown represents the vigilante in any individual caught in a neighbourhood with seemingly unreversable problems involving crime and drugs.
Very much a metaphor for the generational clash in modern Britain. John B Super Reviewer. See all Audience reviews. There are no approved quotes yet for this movie. Best Horror Movies.

Mr Blair unveiled his vision for regenerating Britain's inner cities and underlined his government's determination to tackle the issues and declared that there must not be any "no hope areas".
British rapper, Tinie Tempah, grew up on Aylesbury Estate and his memories of living there are in tune with some of the darker sides of films shot there. Those high-rises, when you wake up in the morning, they don't inspire you - you don't feel the need to want to get out of there.
Unique memory. Despite millions of pounds being spent on regeneration over the years, the Aylesbury Estate, together with the neighbouring Heygate Estate, are in the process of being demolished and rebuilt. But the film director Joe Cornish, who made the science fiction hit Attack The Block on the Heygate Estate, says he chose the area because it has a futuristic appeal.
Determined to stand up for himself despite warnings from Harry to just keep quiet and let the police handle it, Leonard is found stabbed to death in the underpass. Met by the compassionate yet businesslike D. Frustrated and tired of sitting on the sidelines, Harry calls on his long buried past and brings his own brand of vigilante justice to the Estate.
Talk about a surprising athletic action performance! I never would have expected to see Caine at this stage of his career running, arming himself with multiple weapons, and even pulling off some nice little action sequences. A real standout scene involves Harry buying guns from some of the local crime lords where he pulls the wool over the eyes of the scumbags, blows out the tv, knifes a guy and then shoots him, chases the other guy into the pot growing greenhouse, blows him away, ignites everything and then carries a girl to safety — WOW!!
Going beyond the athleticism and action, Caine is the consummate dramatic actor with a tacitly passionate and emotional performance ruled by conviction of presence perhaps due in large part to his own similarity with HARRY BROWN. Telling you exactly how it is. We are here because this is all so real. I understood the character absolutely and completely. Emily Mortimer was a surprise. Alice Frampton, I never would have suspected it to be her. These two performances alone speak volumes as to her ability and talent as an actress.
As Alice Frampton, she exudes a very timid mousey attitude hidden by a thin veneer of false confidence; never dealing from strength to weakness, she pushed Frampton forward no matter no matter what hand she was dealt despite her fear and trepidation.
Mortimer brought a real humanity to the character.
