That was the knock on him coming out of Oakland, that he had potential but dropped too many passes. Sure, the Raiders haven't exactly been the model for stability in recent years, as an organization and certainly not at quarterback. So it's easy to blame the team for Heyward-Bey not living up to being the seventh overall pick in the NFL draft. But this guy does fill a specific need. When the Colts go with three wide-receiver sets, they want two speed guys outside and veteran Reggie Wayne maneuvering in the slot.
Wayne had a Pro Bowl season in with catches for 1, yards and five TDs. The receptions and yards were the second-highest totals of his career, the yards tying his number in And Reg did a lot of that work from the slot with Hilton and Donnie Avery outside. The Colts didn't re-sign Avery, who made some plays but dropped his share of passes. We now wait to see if Heyward-Bey is an Avery upgrade, someone who could figure into the team's long-term plans. If not, he's a one-year rental.
And a low-risk one at that. You roll the dice for one year on the guy. If it doesn't work, hey, you took a chance. It will be interesting to see how the Colts line up in two wide-receiver sets.
