What is the difference between hard rock and alternative rock

I guess? That's the only reason I can think of. I know that Alternative Metal is pretty much Alternative Rock and Heavy Metal together so I didn't think it would be hard to identify but turns out it is well for me anyway It's really bugging me, what bands can safely be called Alternative Metal without also being labeled as Hard Rock?

If someone could clarify and help me get a better understanding I'd highly appreciate it :. Hard Rock is Rock. It uses rock and roll rhythms and is usually based in the same scales used in most rock music.

Alternative Metal is Heavy Metal that mixes its sound with non metal genres. This began by mixing alternative rock with Metal, which is where the name comes from. However specific types of Alternative Metal have Developed. These are types of Alternative Metal, but there is also Alternative Metal that does not fall into these categories. But the difference is the foundation. Mike: Oh, cool. So you like Local H and Tool too? Fred: Actually, I was talking about Puddle of Mudd. Fuck you. A catch-all phrase categorizing whatever music dorky high school kids listen to despite the fact that alternative rock can be quite varied musically.

For example, the Red Hot Chili Peppers sound much different than Disturbed, yet both may be considered alternative rock. On the other hand, Disturbed sounds exactly like 3 Days Grace and Nickelback. As punk was defined more by an attitude and an ethos than a particular style of music, so is alternative rock. That ethos is bands joining together all over America to make bland, passionless insincere rock music with lyrics about depression and breakups to cash in on teenage angst and stupidity.

Though Rock and Alternative music genre gives out good rhythm, the former one has a stronger rhythm. Other characteristics of Rock include guitar riffs, singable melodies and simple accompaniment. The sounds in alternative music ranges from the gloomy sounds of the gothic rock to the dirty guitars of the grunge. M, The Smiths and The Cure and such subgenres as radio friendly post-punk. These college bands were actually in the mainstream rock genre as far as beats and instrumentation were concerned but diverted from mainstream by changing subject matter in their music, image and did a lot of experimentation with their instrument set up and arrangements that were not typically rock. Alternative rock is basically an umbrella term for post-punk bands from the mid s to the mid s. The s alternative rock was even more diverse and segmented than the mainstream; roots rock, alternative dance, jangle-pop, post-hardcore punk, funk-metal, punk-pop, and experimental rock were among the classified styles here.
